The Breed History

The American Staffordshire Terrier is not a new breed. Although it gained American Kennel Club registration and recognition in 1936, it has been developed since the early 1800's as a result of crosses between the bulldogs of that time and game terriers. Official Breed Standard

The purpose of a standard is to be a guide for breeders and judges. The American Staffordshire Terrier should give the impression of great strength for his size, a well put-together dog, muscular, but agile and graceful, keenly alive to his surroundings. Breed Health

The mission of the STCA health committee is to: Identify diseases and ailments of the American Staffordshire Terrier. Provide funding for health research projects beneficial to our breed Provide support and information for owners needing help in a health crisis situation. Educate breeders and owners on diseases of the American Staffordshire Terrier and the importance of utilizing available health tests.
